What Actually Happened On My Monday Night:
I left work early so I could make it to the dry cleaners before they closed. I got there with one minute to spare. Then, I jetted over to the grocery store and started working off my list. Call me crazy, but I buy certain things from certain grocery stores. I have found that all personal care products, cleaning supplies, milk, bread, cereal and condiments are cheaper at Target. I tend to save those items for my monthly Target trip. Other items such as lean cuisines, fruit, crackers, etc are best at the grocery store just down the street from me. So, here I am picking up the usual suspects when I make a quick detour. I was running low on cereal but knew I wouldn't make it to Target this week, so I peeked at the prices and began doing a little price comparison. Whattya know, a guy, right around my age is doing something similar and decides to be outgoing and strike up a conversation. He asked me if I knew anything about coffee, I said no, and then he asked if I knew where he could find baking soda. I gave him an answer and he began to linger. He started telling me about his coffee dilemma, and how he has been spending too much money at Starbucks. This topic does not appeal to me. I don't drink coffee. I dont go to Starbucks (although I think it is a pretty trendy thing and I don't mind reading a newspaper in the coffee shop every now and then ...). I begin to walk away. He begins to walk with me. I ask him if he needs help finding the baking soda (this must have been where he got the wrong idea) and he says he would. He follows me from isle to isle and finally stops me. He strikes up a "where do you live, what do you do, are you from here (and now for the line that will get me everytime) ... I just moved here". I am such a sucker. I, of course, start asking him questions not sure where the entire conversation is going and actually pretty embarrassed I am talking to this guy in the middle of the grocery store. After about 40 minutes.. YES... 40 MINUTES... I ask him "ok, I have been trying to figure out how old you are because you said you lived here, lived there, moved there and I just can't put it together." His reply: "24". NOPE. NO CHANCE. NOT HAPPENING. DEAR LORD GET ME OUT OF HERE. My reply: "Well, thats too bad. I could never date you." He obviously asks why. I tell him he is too young for me and ask him if he would like to meet my sister (Sorry E). He begins to explain to me how mature he is and why age shouldn't matter. Then, to make it all better, he made a comment in third person which is how I found out his name. His name happens to be the name of my ex. Strike 2. He keeps talking (he was pretty funny, I'll give him that) and then I begin to (try) to wrap it up. I must have said 3 times that I had to get going. I even made a joke that my milk was getting warm. He continued to talk. Finally I just started walking away with my cart saying "no really, I have to keep moving. My milk is getting warm." So he followed me. He walked with me to the milk isle. He walked with me while I completed the rest of my shopping. He just kept talking the whole way. (I have now been in the grocery store close to 2 hours.... ) Finally I finish my shopping and he says "I have to pick up a few things. Will you come with me?" I laughed. I said "I really have to go" but then instantly felt bad and said "ok, as long as you make this quick." We picked out his laundry detergent and he asked my advice on a good AirWick plugin. I head to the register naturally, he stands in line with me. I looked at him and said "I feel like I'm on a date and I feel a little uncomfortable about it". No joke ... he said 'whats wrong with that?". After that he continued to help me bag my groceries and I tried to part ways as we walked out of the store doors, but I should have known better. He walked me to my car, tried to help me load my groceries in the trunk, and then leaned on my car and continued to talk. I tried to tell him that I was cold, that I was hungry, that it was late, but nothing worked. He kept talking. I continued to tell him that I would never date him, and he continued to tell me that age doesn't matter. After 3 hours ... I managed to get away. Flattering? Yes. A new friend? Maybe. A stalker? Please say no. Did I waste an entire Monday night? Yep. GOSH I AM A SUCKERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR and I am definitely sticking to always buying cereal at Target.
